  • School Dance

  • Pick a Theme! Theme Sets the Stage For A Great Dance!
How to achieve the perfect atmosphere for your bash!
Here's your chance to take two hours, jack up the fun and turn your dance into the most totally cool on record. Every dance has music, some food - maybe a cake, lights. Those are the bare, bones. The basics. But to turn a dance into a happening, you need to pay attention to the theme. That means creating a whole new world for your bud's to dance into! That world can be created through careful choice of theme, decorations, fun stuff to do, see and be! Here are some cool ideas.
Hillbilly Hoedown aka Sadie Hawkins
Sadie Hawkins is a traditional "girl asks boy" to dance. Hillbilly Hoedown is a come one, come all. Put Annie Oakley on the flyer for a change of pace for a Wild West Spectacular!
Dress: As a can-can dancer, or in a lavish Victorian ball gown. Your guests could dress as outlaws or cowpunchers in coveralls and plaid shirts, wear braids and ribbons, dress as Indians or preachers or Sunday school teachers.
Activities: Be sure you invite the local square dance club to teach you how to dance in groups. Or, a country western caller! You could have a "jail" to raise money for charity, sending out a posse with sheriffs to round up varmits. Then their friends have to raise their "bail" to get them out again.
Decorations: Big bales of hay and scarecrows.

Star Struck!
This is a cool dance to do with different classes.
Dress: Sixth graders all come dressed as their favorite movie stars. Seventh Graders come dressed as their favorite rock, pop and country stars.
Decorations: Pure Hollywood, stage lights, foil stars everywhere.
Activities: Your ticket to the party is a stage pass. The winners to the costume, dance, and karoke competition all get fake Oscar statues. Invite students to do a scene from their favorite movie on stage ("I"ve got a bad feeling about this!" "Why don't you come up and see me sometime?") or to do a song from their favorite rock star, karoke style.

Topsy Turvey aka Feast Of Fools!
This is a girl ask guys turnaround dance.
Decor and Dress: Think medieval fantasy. Drag out your props from the drama department. Hand out plastic tiaras and fake crowns and sweeping capes at the door.
Activities: Serve a cake with two candies hidden inside. Whoever gets these pieces will reign over the feast of fools.

Monster Mash
Send out flyers with bats or coffins or Frankenstein's Bride. You could rent a 16mm projector and show really old fright fests from the 1920's. Hang posters on the walls from the Bride of Frankenstein or Creeping Terror. Cover your gym with cobwebs, coffins, bats and skeletons and bugs! Students should come dressed as their favorite movie monster.

Phantom Of The Opera or Mardi Gras Spectacular
Decorate ala Monster Mash. But give your dance a Phantom of the Opera twist by handing out half, white party masks at the door. Or fill tables with mask makings, and invite your friends to make their own. Then fill the refreshment table with rented silver, candelabras and trays filled with pearls and jewels, and use drapes of fancy fabric from the fabric store. Don't forget to make an appearance as the phantom or his lovely opera singer! Ask students to dress in their Victorian era best! Deck the hall with strings of pearls, fake jewels, candelabras and of course, spider webs! Be sure to plant jelly beans in the cake so that you can pick a Mardi Gras court or the Phantom's mate.

Through The Looking Glass
Your flyer to a Wonderland party could be a picture of a white rabbit with a pocket watch. Your decor could be poster sized playing cards on the wall, black and white checkerboard table cloth, and pink plastic flamingo's as table decorations. You could have the student council dress as Alice, the Mad Hatter or the Queen. Guests could dress in Victorian best.

Reverse Universe
This is a backwards dance. Kids say "bye" instead of "hi", wear their clothing backwards, dance and walk backwards. Signs are written so the words are flipped backwards. The icing is inside the cake, not outside. Streamers are on the floor. Paste balloons on the stage upside down, with their strings attached to the ceiling. Tablecloths are under the table. Girls ask boys to dance. Brave guys wear dresses. On the wall, there is a mural showing dogs walking their people and prisoners arresting their jailors. Flowers on the tables are stem side up. You get the idea. Turn the world upside down and backwards.
The Roaring 20s
Flappers, molls, gangsters, the Charleston. Get old movie posters and pictures from that era. Disco mirrored balls were a must at big parties of the day. You could even arrange for "The Untouchables" to raid the place!

Star Wars!
Get the disco version of the sound track and invite students to come as aliens, Imperials, Rebels, Royalty, and Villany, or Jedi Knights. Have members of the dance committee come as Han Solo, Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader and maybe even a Wookie!

Grease! (50s)
Bobby socks, sunglasses, cuffed levis, calf-length dresses, slicked back hair. Rockin' and rollin' back in time. See if you can get the local classic car club to lend you a car for pictures.

Still deciding?
How about?
* The Time Machine
* Science Fiction Double Feature
* Aladdin's Treasure
* Disco Discovery (70s)
* Underwater Adventure
* Pyramid Power
Have fun with whatever you decide! Let your imagination soar. When the moon goes down on your dance, kids will remember it because it was about something special that you cared about. Here's hoping you have an outstanding time.

  • Prom Ideas

  • Prom is always a big undertaking, but it doesn't have to be overwhelming. Getting help with the planning and all the little details that will make your prom perfect are the keys to success. We've gathered together tips from successful prom coordinators, professional prom planners, and prom committee members.
Good luck and we hope your prom is perfect!

Prom Committee Checklist:
Prom committees should be formed at the beginning of the school year. You must choose the date and location first.
Choosing A Location
Depending on the location, you may have to book it a few months before or up to 16-18 months in advance. Evaluate the facility for sound capability and whether it can handle a large band. Check it for adequate parking. Some places will offer to decorate, provide food, and security. Find out exactly what their price includes.
Choosing Entertainment
If you decide on choosing a band, consider at least three. Try and listen to them in person. You can talk to last year's committee and see if they have any suggestions. Choose a versatile band that can play several styles of music. If you decide on using a DJ, confirm what type of sound and lighting equipment is included in the price quote. Some DJ's will include a light show, fog machine, etc. Make sure that the DJ has a current music library. Ask for a list of school references. Once you select the DJ check their space requirement for their equipment and also special power requirements. Once you hire a band/DJ make sure they are aware of particular songs that you may want played at the prom (theme song, or class favorites). Make sure you get everything in writing, including time, date, and location. Include the name of the DJ and/or musicians in the contract in order to avoid bait and switch tactics. Be sure that the band/DJ has liability insurance.

Choosing A Photographer
Once you know the event date, book the photographer. Make sure you get bids and check references. Ask if they offer rebates to schools to help defray the cost of the event. Check with the photographer to get the necessary ordering and payment information. Ask what package selections are available. Be sure to get the delivery time of the photos in writing. You may want to consider posting a sign-up sheet for photo time-slots in order to organize the photo shoot. You can make a photographic background to coordinate with the event's theme or the photographer may have one that goes with your theme. Many photographers have sets with different themes to choose from. If you make your own, consult with the photographer in order to get the correct size and material needed. Select a background that enhances the formal look.
Choosing A Theme

Here Are Some Popular Prom Themes:
The Perfect Prom

Decorations
A prom kit can be purchased from various catalogs, but they are expensive and you still have to assemble them. You can get ideas from their catalogs and build your own. Local rental companies may have some of what you need at a better price. Check both options and choose the one that best fits your school's budget.
Security
Some sites chosen for prom will include security, but in most cases you must provide your own. You could hire a security company or off-duty police officers. Check with the local school board and police officials for guidance in this area.
Prom Fundraisers
* Typical fundraisers include selling candy and donuts, and washing cars. Also, magazine sales are popular.
* You can also contact local fast-food restaurants or small businesses such as hair salons to see if they will donate a percentage of their proceeds for a specific time period.
* A fashion show could be arranged with the help of local formalwear stores and department stores to showcase prom fashions and also spring fashions.
* Your school could make a sports highlight video to sell to the community.
* Poinsettia sales are popular around Christmas.
* Rummage sale or an auction.
* Set up a booth at the mall to wrap Christmas presents.
* Talent show.
* Raffle for donated products.

  • Luau Surprise Party

  • Rhonda of Alta Loma, CA

Surprise 30th luau Party- Adults Only. My sister Tammie is Turning 30 this August 2002 and I could not be happier about this. She is the baby of the family next to our own kids. So this is what I am doing for her. I have chosen colors of Tangerine and Lime Green and Hot pink for her table covers and place settings. I am having it catered complete with "The Margarita Man" and a really cool band. Her party will be at my home by the pool "LUAU ATTIRE A MUST". I have rented round tables and chairs (because I think they look more grown up) every other table will be different colors. We will be lighting up the trees with white twinkle lights but the fun is all in the decorations. Since my part time job is a balloon decorator. I have decided to do a canopy of glow in the dark balloons over the tables (black lights are needed to make them glow) that later will be used for a balloon release. I was really stuck on centerpieces. so here is a cheep way to decorate. I am having some of my trees cut down in the back yard. so I have them cutting them into foot long pieces for me, my husband will drill wholes down the center of them. so they are standing straight up once the wholes are drilled in I will take fresh flowers and arrange them in the wood for centerpieces. I also am having my husband take some of the wood and drill it very thinly so that I can take stencils of palm trees and etch them into the wood so that I can drop candles down them for a more elegant look for the food tables.. each guest will have assigned seating so I have place cards with their names in Hawaiian and English. the fun part about the whole evening is the cake. I wanted something very different. so I have chosen to not have a traditional large cake but to have each guest have their own cake (about the size of your hand like a miniature wedding cake) they will be frosted with Tangerine, lime green and Hot pink frosting with very tropical flowers. When it is time to serve the cakes and sing the big Birthday song. the lights will dim and every guest will be receiving sparklers that they will light themselves with the candles on the table. as we all sing the Happy birthday song and the sparklers are glowing. I have hired 3 of the teenage girls from our block to come out with these cakes handing them out to everyone. as soon as she blows out the candles my husband and father will light off 4 sky rockets (this worked out great since 4th of July was yesterday. We have decided to not play games but rather to hire a company that comes in (since we will all be in swim suits) they bring neon paint and black lights for all to enjoy. (we can rub it all over each other. I have also decided that I did not want to have the 30ish gag gifts for her so I have put on the invitation that their presence is gift enough but if they feel so inclined to give a money tree would be there to send her to a day spa for her actual birthday. I am having a florist come in and float fresh flowers in my pool and drape my patio cover with tropical fresh flowers and Banana leaves. every guest will receive fresh flower lei's. Then the ladies will all give my sister a rub down with fresh water that has fragrant flower petals in it to relax her and make her smell tropical as they rub the water on her they give good wishes for a bright year to come. I have had the florist make a special head piece for her and lei. I have hired a photographer and video photographer to follow us threw the whole event. Oh.. as party favors my husband and I have been collecting pictures of her from the family. we have put a sort of magazine together Calling it "Tammie" It has a gorgeous 8x10 picture of her on the front with titles of what to expect inside. We put pictures of her as a baby, and accomplishment in her life. pictures of graduation, prom with her hubby, her wedding, her holding all her children for the first time. etc. each picture had the date and a small article about the event. The back page we have asked each of her family including her kids and niece and nephews to write something special about her. and has a picture of each kids or relative who wrote it Its a tear jerker. My husband did a wonderful job on this. I have to admit this party has been very costly. But she is so well worth it. The centerpieces were the less expensive since the logs will be free. we will be sending out at the end of this month 122 invites. I cant wait.

  • Graduation Party

  • Graduation from high school or college is an exciting time in anyone's life. It's a great accomplishment and we can't think of a better excuse for a party!
Fun Tip: You might consider combining your party with another graduate. That way you can share the work and finances required for a successful party, and sharing a common goal can be fun. Be sure to pick a budget first.
Pick A Theme
It's always a good idea to have a theme even though it is a graduation party and that in itself is a great theme. But try adding some interests or hobbies of the graduate and all of a sudden you've made it more memorable. These can include anything from sports, flying, gourmet cooking, dancing, to body building!
College Bound: Deck the walls with college pennants, banners and jerseys from the graduate's new school. Use the college colors as part of your decorating theme.
Rockin' Dance Party: Graduation's a big deal and everyone deserves to party and party big! A Rockin' Dance Party is a great choice if the graduate likes to dance and party. This works well when you are combining your party with another graduate's. Make sure to include a DJ!
Roast Em: That would be the graduate, not the burgers and dogs! Have a People Magazine Cover poster made of the graduate and put it on an easel near at the front of the room. Use an old photograph taken from years ago alongside a current color one, making sure it tells a story, humorous or otherwise! Or have a caricature drawn of the graduate depicting hobbies and interests, go to Kinko's and have a large poster made of it.
Try a Hawaiian Luau which is a relaxed and fun party. Greet your guests with leis, hang tropical fish from the ceiling and palm trees on the walls, have guests wear grass skirts and dance the limbo. Have hula contests and ground surfing contests. Serve grilled fish, roasted pork, salads, fresh fruit, and rice.
Barbecues are easy, tried and true, and everyone always loves the food. Set tables in gingham tablecloths, with matching plates and napkins and serve hotdogs and hamburgers.
Location-
If you are not sure where to host your party, your theme will help point you in the right direction. Luaus and barbecues work great in backyards or parks, roasts are best in a private room in a hotel or club house where there is a sound system. A dance party could be held in a disco, nightclub or hotel as you will need a sound system and dance floor. College bound could be hosted in a private home or a rented room. Keep in mind that there may be a lot of guests coming and going due to the likelihood of several parties going on at the same time.
Planning
Compare calendars with your family and friends to find a date that works. Remember, weekends around graduation get pretty busy. Not only will you be competing with other graduation parties, but also weddings, baby showers, and team or club banquets. As soon as you've picked the date, let your out-of-town guests know so they can plan a trip and have others reserve the date.
Invitations
Party invitations should be fun and simple and also set the mood for your event. You can use the many assorted pre-packaged versions that match your tableware design, have custom-made ones, or use your creativity and make your own. Here are a few ideas to inspire:
* Make a diploma invitation. Write your party details on a cream-colored sheet of paper with a black marker or calligraphy pen. Roll it up and tie a red ribbon around it.
* Create an invitation that reads like a final exam. Example: 1) If you were going to (name's) graduation party, you would expect:
o A buffet with exotic foods
o A great Hawaiian punch
o A chance to dance the limbo
o All of the above
* At the bottom, fill in the party details
* Use the school colors for the invitation, one color for the card and the other for the envelope.
* Add a photo or caricature of the graduate to the invitation.
* If you are going with a theme, be sure to carry it through to your invitations.
Decorating
Decorating can be as simple as hanging crepe streamers and arranging balloon bouquets in the school colors around the room. Other ideas include:
Hang a Congratulations Graduate banner. Personalized banners can also be made.
Decorate tabletops with graduation confetti.
For a high-school graduation, hang up pennants and banners from the college they'll be attending. Decorate using school colors, alternating both colors for place settings.
For a college graduation, hang up want ads, brochures and advertisements from companies in the graduate's field, or highlight the company for which they'll be working.
Plant a yard sign with the graduate's name on it in front of the house to help guests find the party.
Use graduation caps as centerpieces and fill with candies or use as a weight for a balloon bouquet. If someone is into football, use that as a weight for your sports related balloons.
Don't forget to incorporate your theme into your party favors and decorations! If the graduate likes basketball, you'll find lots that you can tie-in, including nametags, confetti, napkin rings, centerpieces, and anything else you can think of.
Guest Book
Have everyone sign a guest book. A great idea for such a special occasion. Have a space where they can leave personal messages for the graduate. Put down some ideas to get the ball rolling such as, "He'll be the first man to walk on Mars" or "I couldn't have had a better friend in high school". This will be a wonderful momento for the graduate to look back on one day!
Tableware Buying Guide
Beverage Napkins

Cutlery/Place Setting

Plastic Cups
4/person (beverage/outdoor party)
2/person (dinner party)
Coffee/Hot/Cold Cups
2/person (beverage/buffet party)
1/person (dinner party)
It's traditional to use plates, napkins and cups in coordinating school colors.
Personalize The Party
Honor the graduate by displaying some of their awards, trophies, accomplishments and old photographs. Don't limit the photos to just the graduate, but include friends, family and teammates. Post the photos and momentos on poster boards or eisels and dress them up with stickers, tickets, memorabilia and other decorations.

Entertainment & Activities
Have a job interview. Have the grad's best friend prepare some tough questions as if giving an actual interview.

Drew's Famous Graduation Party Music is a great mix of songs for a grad party.
