Women Pile On The Pounds After Marriage, Men After Divorce

     The change in marital status for both sexes was found to have a knock on effect on weight, described as being significant enough to pose a serious health risk. Those over the age of 30 were found to be more susceptible to weight changes as a result of a transition in their relationship status.
     The research followed 10,071 individuals over the course of 20 years between 1986-2008. The study looked at a broad spectrum of people including those in relationships, single, cohabiting, married, divorced and separated individuals.
     However, even after taking into consideration different factors such as employment, pregnancies, economic situations, education levels and so on, the scientists discovered a definite link between weight increase in women after marriage, and the same for men after a divorce.
     The two years after getting married are the danger years for women as this is when females were most likely to gain weight with 48% risk of large weight increase of more than 3 BMI points.
     One possible reason cited by the scientists for the findings of the study is that married women tend to have a larger role in the running of the marital home, meaning they have less time for exercise compared to a single female counterpart. Men on the other hand seem to benefit from marriage in terms of their health, although the opposite is true if the marriage ends.
