     Pick a Theme! Theme Sets the Stage For A Great Dance!
     How to achieve the perfect atmosphere for your bash!
     Here’s your chance to take two hours, jack up the fun and turn your dance into the most totally cool on record. Every dance has music, some food - maybe a cake, lights. Those are the bare, bones. The basics. But to turn a dance into a happening, you need to pay attention to the theme. That means creating a whole new world for your bud’s to dance into! That world can be created through careful choice of theme, decorations, fun stuff to do, see and be! Here are some cool ideas.
     Hillbilly Hoedown aka Sadie Hawkins
     Sadie Hawkins is a traditional “girl asks boy” to dance. Hillbilly Hoedown is a come one, come all. Put Annie Oakley on the flyer for a change of pace for a Wild West Spectacular!
     Dress: As a can-can dancer, or in a lavish Victorian ball gown. Your guests could dress as outlaws or cowpunchers in coveralls and plaid shirts, wear braids and ribbons, dress as Indians or preachers or Sunday school teachers.
     Activities: Be sure you invite the local square dance club to teach you how to dance in groups. Or, a country western caller! You could have a “jail” to raise money for charity, sending out a posse with sheriffs to round up varmits. Then their friends have to raise their “bail” to get them out again.
     Decorations: Big bales of hay and scarecrows.

     Star Struck!
     This is a cool dance to do with different classes.
     Dress: Sixth graders all come dressed as their favorite movie stars. Seventh Graders come dressed as their favorite rock, pop and country stars.
     Decorations: Pure Hollywood, stage lights, foil stars everywhere.
     Activities: Your ticket to the party is a stage pass. The winners to the costume, dance, and karoke competition all get fake Oscar statues. Invite students to do a scene from their favorite movie on stage (“I"ve got a bad feeling about this!” “Why don’t you come up and see me sometime?”) or to do a song from their favorite rock star, karoke style.

     Topsy Turvey aka Feast Of Fools!
     This is a girl ask guys turnaround dance.
     Decor and Dress: Think medieval fantasy. Drag out your props from the drama department. Hand out plastic tiaras and fake crowns and sweeping capes at the door.
     Activities: Serve a cake with two candies hidden inside. Whoever gets these pieces will reign over the feast of fools.

     Monster Mash
     Send out flyers with bats or coffins or Frankenstein’s Bride. You could rent a 16mm projector and show really old fright fests from the 1920’s. Hang posters on the walls from the Bride of Frankenstein or Creeping Terror. Cover your gym with cobwebs, coffins, bats and skeletons and bugs! Students should come dressed as their favorite movie monster.

     Phantom Of The Opera or Mardi Gras Spectacular
     Decorate ala Monster Mash. But give your dance a Phantom of the Opera twist by handing out half, white party masks at the door. Or fill tables with mask makings, and invite your friends to make their own. Then fill the refreshment table with rented silver, candelabras and trays filled with pearls and jewels, and use drapes of fancy fabric from the fabric store. Don’t forget to make an appearance as the phantom or his lovely opera singer! Ask students to dress in their Victorian era best! Deck the hall with strings of pearls, fake jewels, candelabras and of course, spider webs! Be sure to plant jelly beans in the cake so that you can pick a Mardi Gras court or the Phantom’s mate.

     Through The Looking Glass
     Your flyer to a Wonderland party could be a picture of a white rabbit with a pocket watch. Your decor could be poster sized playing cards on the wall, black and white checkerboard table cloth, and pink plastic flamingo’s as table decorations. You could have the student council dress as Alice, the Mad Hatter or the Queen. Guests could dress in Victorian best.

     Reverse Universe
     This is a backwards dance. Kids say “bye” instead of “hi”, wear their clothing backwards, dance and walk backwards. Signs are written so the words are flipped backwards. The icing is inside the cake, not outside. Streamers are on the floor. Paste balloons on the stage upside down, with their strings attached to the ceiling. Tablecloths are under the table. Girls ask boys to dance. Brave guys wear dresses. On the wall, there is a mural showing dogs walking their people and prisoners arresting their jailors. Flowers on the tables are stem side up. You get the idea. Turn the world upside down and backwards.
     The Roaring 20s
     Flappers, molls, gangsters, the Charleston. Get old movie posters and pictures from that era. Disco mirrored balls were a must at big parties of the day. You could even arrange for “The Untouchables” to raid the place!

     Star Wars!
     Get the disco version of the sound track and invite students to come as aliens, Imperials, Rebels, Royalty, and Villany, or Jedi Knights. Have members of the dance committee come as Han Solo, Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader and maybe even a Wookie!

     Grease! (50s)
     Bobby socks, sunglasses, cuffed levis, calf-length dresses, slicked back hair. Rockin’ and rollin’ back in time. See if you can get the local classic car club to lend you a car for pictures.
