• Nesting: Planning the Perfect Nesting Themed Baby Shower

    • So often, when trying to plan a fabulous and creative baby shower, it is difficult to come up with a theme to set the tone for the day. And recently, this was the issue my mother and I ran into when trying to plan what I affectionately refer to as the baby shower of the century, for one of my oldest and dearest friends. However, falling in love with a beautiful invitation ended up providing the perfect inspiration for what we ultimately decided would be a nesting themed baby shower.

Invitations For a nesting themed shower, sending out an invitation with birds or branches or even tree's, sends the message to your guests what your theme is going to be. Alternately, using a simple, traditional invitation but with clever wording referring to "nesting", (such as, Let's Fill her Nest with all the Best) also conveys the same message. Whether formal or casual in design or motif, your invitation sets the initial tone of the event regardless of the type of party you are hosting.

Decor Oh how I love to decorate and make a party look pretty! And a shower with this theme allows you to bring some of the outdoors in with some natural branches, twigs and raffia. Grapevine wreaths in different sizes can be stacked inside one another to create a fantastic large bird's nest centerpiece, and inexpensive faux birds and eggs can be purchased at your local craft store. Using some floral wire, you can attach some birds in different sizes to the sides of bowls, chafing dishes, candlesticks, etc so that everywhere your guests look, they are surprised with another touch of your theme you've so cleverly placed.

Dessert Not only delicious, a desert for a baby shower of this caliber should be beautiful as well. Delicate cupcakes with coconut birds nests and baby birds piped out of icing are sure to be a crowd pleaser, as is a gorgeous fondant covered cake with a birds nest and gum paste eggs to perfectly match your invitation. Even simpler and just as beautiful is a lovely layered cake decorated with delicate twigs which you make yourself. Simpler still, is a lightly frosted hummingbird cake with a purchased birds nest on top for decoration. Simple, yet stunning.

Special Touches I am all about the small special touches that truly make a day so very special and memorable. For this particular shower, we thought a "wish tree" would give us that perfect and personal touch we were looking for. To create our "wish tree" we clipped branches and twigs and arranged them in a simple glass vase filled with natural raffia. Birds were cut out of pretty coordinating papers which all matched our peach, brown, and white color scheme, then hole punched and tied with ribbon. A simple note displayed asked each guest to chose a bird, write a wish for the baby and hang it on the tree. At the end of the shower, our "wish tree" was covered in beautiful paper birds with heartfelt wishes for the baby on the way. The mother-to-be can then use these birds in the baby's scrapbook, as a baby mobile, or even place them on the Christmas tree every year as a sweet memory of the special day and all the people in the baby's life.

Favors I am a big believer that party favors are a nice way to show your guests you both appreciated and enjoyed having them at your party. In keeping with the nesting baby shower theme, buying small birds nests and putting chocolates, an egg shaped soap, or even a pack of specially packaged bird seed or tree seeds, is the perfect send off for the perfect party. We chose Godiva truffles for our birds nests, topped them off with tags for Baby Girl Minetti, then individually wrapped each nest in cellophane and it was truly the perfect parting gift. You may choose to do the same, or to fill your nests with a treat that is a favorite of the mother to be's. However, if you are wanting something simpler, then contact a specialty cookie designer such as Laura Poland and have her create and decorate beautiful bird cookies with the baby's name on them, delivered right to your door step wrapped in cellophane and ready to go.

Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!

Gifting While we chose to go the traditional route and give the mother-to-be a gift from her baby registry, you may opt to give a gift in keeping with the shower theme. A thoughtful and lovely shower gift for the mother in keeping with the nesting shower theme is to give the expectant mother a nest charm that she can wear on a bracelet or necklace to remember the special day. Or, how about hanging a laundry line of sorts, over the gift table, with a onesie for each month of the first year, attached to the line with wooden clothes pins and birds sporadically perched on the line as well as a friend of mine suggested. Gifts of books with birds as the main characters and tree's planted in the child's name are also great gifting ideas keeping with the shower theme that are sure to make a lasting impression.

Regardless of the ideas and touches you chose to incorporate into your own nesting baby shower, you can be sure that it will be a day to remember for all who attend. Remember to take plenty of pictures of all your little touches here and there, and most of all, enjoy being the hostess and celebrating filling the mother-to-be's nest with all the best.
