Vandall Party idea submitted by Vandall Jan 17th, 2010

    • Creepy Crawly Birthday

    • This is for my 3-year-old son's birthday. He is obsessed with alligators, dinosaurs, and anything else slimy and scaly.

18 guests.  6 children, 12 adults.

Theme: Reptiles
Colors: Kiwi Green, Orange, and Turquoise Blue

Custom Invitations:
I made a 6x6 coloring book for each child invited. (Directions below)
I also attached a package of crayons with custom wrappers that included party information. Template available at www.chicaandjo.com

Venue:
Kiawah Island Nature Center (http://www.kiawahresort.com/recreation/)
A conservationist will have a "Reptile Roundup" for party guests. Classes start at $200, but because of the small number of children attending and because they are so young, I got a great deal at the Nature Center.

Adjacent to the Nature Center is Night Heron Park, which includes picnic tables overlooking the river, a pavilion, and a playground. These are available for free, but cannot be rented in advance. Because my son's birthday is in January, we will have the whole place to ourselves.

Decorations:
Minimal. I don't have long to set up,, and it's a birthday party, not a gala. I ordered 2 dozen balloons from Tina Dear at Newton Farms in my party colors. These will line the walk to the Nature Center and decorate the picnic tables used. I am on the fence about table cloths because of the wind. They may prove to be too much trouble. Solid napkins in my party colors were found at the Dollar Spot at Target. Because decorating inside the Nature Center is not an option, I'm off the hook and only responsible for the picnic area.

Food:
My party is not during meal time.
I ordered an alligator shaped cupcake cake from Publix. I will make a cookie snake. (The recipe for this is available in the 2010 Kraft Foods calendar for the month of October.)
Because I'm only serving cupcakes and cookies, plates and utensils are not needed.
Juice boxes for the children. Individual bottle drinks for the adults.

Gifts:
Will be opened at home, after the party. (I've found that if a melt-down happens, it's when one child gets a gazillion gifts, and several small children are not given new toys.)

Party Favors:
I got paper mache boxes from my local craft store ($3 each) and painted orange. I glued green ribbon with orange and blue polka dots along the top edge. The top of the box was decorated with wooden lizards or turtles (available painted at craft stores for less than $1.00). I also got wooden letters and painted them blue. I glued the first initial of each child's name on his box.
At the Dollar Tree, I found toy snakes and alligators, stickers, pencils, glow sticks, M&M's, bubble gum, Tootsie Rolls, and Play Doh.

Thank You Notes:
Downloading a template online, I custom wrapped full size Hershey Bars and sent as my thank you notes.

Budget:
$  42  Venue
$  30 Cake
$  24 Balloons
$  20 Invitation Supplies
$ 40 Party Favor boxes and filler
$  10 Thank You Notes
$  15 Drinks
