     In football, the crowd can often become a palpable x-factor. The degree of their a crowd’s support can often be measured by decibels. This is so much more the case with NCAA games, where college pride is often on the line. However, it can often be more than just the student body and the alumni cheering a team on. In some areas, a college football team can carry the pride and the aspirations of a whole region or state. This is especially the case in West Virginia. The nearest professional team is either up north with the Pittsburgh Steelers or to the west with the Cincinnati Bengals. In short, West Virginia University’s Mountaineers are the closest the state will come to a high profile “home” team. This is also why games in Morgantown are such huge, highly packed events. Football games come with a highly festive, party atmosphere. If one is thinking of throwing their own party, there are a two options to consider. Each has their merits, but each comes with their own level of cost. Even more important, each comes with a question of location. Additionally, WVU football tickets can be a highly valued tickets.

     Tailgating has been a decades long tradition at Mountaineer field. If a person walks through the stadium parking lot, they will find all kinds of food, from the average grilled-out fare to something more exotic. It’s also likely that a game-goer will find plenty of beer and alcohol, too. However, due to student drinking problems in the 1980s and 1990’s, WVU’s administration has sought to crack down on rampant drunkenness. This has implications on how one would through a tailgating party. Any sort of food is fine; in fact, burgers, ribs and hot dogs tend to be average, and on colder game days, chili may be a must. Yet, a tailgating host needs to exercise caution with their alcohol. It is a bad idea to hand out beer to just anybody who visits your tent or tailgate, especially if they look like an underage freshman. This is why there is a different tradition with some alumni.

     There are many hotels around Mountaineer Field, and all of them do brisk business during football season. Many alumni not only like to book weekend lodging for themselves, but they also like to turn their rooms into party centers. This allows a greater amount of freedom than tailgating. Food options are not as limited, and a party can even be catered. For wealthier alumni, this allows for easier out-of-town planning, where everything can be booked and organized through the Internet and a cell phone. Like tailgating, hotel parties tend to be pre-game events. However, lodging can go quickly and reservations need to be made far in advance.

        • Nebraska Cornhusker football is the same way. No professional teams in the near vicinity. College football on the weekend is absolutely crazy. A sea of red with tailgating to boot. A great experience. These fans are diehard!
