   • Looking Back- First Birthday Party

     This first birthday party idea is brought to you by Katherine of Loflin Consulting Solutions

     
     Since the first birthday was really more for us than our little girl, I did a “look back” birthday.  I only invited close family, so we all could share and remember “the year that was”—the good and the bad. I also decorated the Hors d’oeuvres table with pictures of her from the year all in silver frames, being sure to include pictures from her first holidays (like Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas)—that was a hit with the family. It was very sentimental and sweet for us.  There will be plenty of birthdays with lots of kids, Elmo birthday favors, clowns and jump houses—but that this one was for us to really celebrate her and her first year with us.

     Of course, we did things for her too like having lots of non-helium balloons, bows and bubble wrap on the ground she could play with, a few gifts, a birthday girl crown and cake(s). We kept it short for her too—about an hour and a half—starting right at the time of her actual birth. I also dressed her comfortably—nothing frilly or formal.  I thought she would dive into her cake, so I didn’t want to have to worry about bibs or what she was messing up so we could just enjoy.  She ended up not diving in the cake, but she was still more comfortable to play and just have fun.

     Another tip: if you have Publix grocery stores where you live, they will do a free baby cake with the purchase of a sheet cake for baby’s one year birthday—not knowing this, I ended up with 3 cakes, because I had baked her a giant cupcake too.
